JEN – Mellow Dramas
„Words become whispers. We exchange glances, leaden with meaning.
Music melts the moment, we dance.”
Spoken Word Poetry.
A form of literary art, in which lyrics, poetry or stories are spoken rather than sung, often done with a musical background, but emphasis is kept on the speaker. Like The Last Poets with their engagement for the afro-american values. Like Gil Scott-Heron, who recited out of his self-written volume of poetry for his first album.
Jennifer Schwed aka JEN from Washington DC is allowed to be mentioned in the same breath with the named above, even though the attractive mid-thirty year old surely misses a political component on her solo-debut on Stereo Deluxe that characterizes an esteemed and often-quoted colleague like Ursula Rucker. Instead of that JEN’s “Mellow Dramas” are mainly dealing with the imminent mental state of the own being. With the interpersonal needs, unaccomplished longings and inner conflicts, as well as the ups and downs of love, lust and life itself.
“This record may be suggestive of getting inspired to write by dealing with certain problems and conflicts, but that is not true”, JEN describes her lyrical readjustment process. “Beauty, satisfaction und luck are inspiring as well. But ‘Mellow Dramas’ is about a conceptual encounter with the different facets of love, and the dark side of amorous emotions are always a great motivation.”
The authenticity in the expression of her voice, the detection of her own longings through the chosen words and the precisely summarizing of existential orientations make “Mellow Dramas” that striking, honest and outstanding and protects it at the same time for drowning in the ocean of irrelevance.
